What FDM print-on-demand actually means for a small business
FDM (Fused Deposition Modelling) print-on-demand is exactly what it sounds like: you submit a file or a brief, we print the part, and you collect or receive it without committing to any machine purchase, subscription, or minimum spend.
For a small business, this removes the barrier that has historically made 3D printing inaccessible — the upfront cost and operational overhead of owning and running the printer. The cost of a single replacement bracket or custom part on a print-on-demand basis is a fraction of what it would cost in traditional manufacturing, and the turnaround is days rather than weeks.
We run the ELEGOO Neptune 4 Max at our Somerset West showroom — a 500×500×500mm build volume FDM printer capable of handling large single-piece prints at up to 500mm/s. Most small business print jobs are well within this envelope.
What kinds of business problems does FDM printing solve?
A machine stops working because a plastic bracket, clip, or housing component has cracked — and the part is discontinued, out of stock, or priced at a minimum order quantity your business doesn't need. FDM printing can replicate functional plastic components from a photo and measurements, or from a 3D file if you have one.
Recommended material: PETG for mechanical parts, ABS for heat-adjacent applications
Mounting a device in a non-standard location, creating a cable management solution for an existing setup, or building a fixture that holds a workpiece at a precise angle during assembly — these are custom problems that standard hardware doesn't solve cleanly. FDM printing produces exact-fit solutions at a per-unit cost that makes sense for small runs.
Recommended material: PETG or ABS for rigidity, TPU for parts requiring flex or vibration absorption
Dimensional lettering for retail displays, reception signage, and branded fixtures. FDM printing in signage filament produces smooth-surfaced letters and logo elements that can be painted, powder-coated, or used directly in a brand colour. The ELEGOO Neptune 4 Max's large build plate handles letters up to 500mm in a single piece.
Recommended material: Signage filament for best surface finish; ASA for outdoor UV stability
A physical prototype in a client's hands communicates scale, proportion, and form in a way that a 3D render on a screen simply doesn't. FDM prototyping is the fastest path from a CAD file to a physical object for client review — typically within a few days rather than the weeks that traditional prototyping methods require.
Recommended material: PLA for non-functional visual prototypes, PETG for functional testing
Drilling guides, assembly jigs, holding fixtures, and quality-check templates. These are high-value tools that improve production consistency and reduce error rates, but their custom nature makes them impractical to manufacture conventionally at small-business scale. FDM printing makes them economical at any quantity, including one.
Recommended material: PETG for most workshop applications; ABS where heat resistance is required
What materials do we print in — and which is right for your part?
- PLA — easiest to print, good dimensional accuracy, suitable for indoor display and visual prototypes. Not ideal for high-temperature or high-stress applications.
- PETG — stronger than PLA, moisture-resistant, and impact-resistant. The recommended default for most functional business parts.
- ABS — heat-resistant up to approximately 100°C. Suitable for parts that will be near motors, lights, or other heat sources.
- ASA — UV-stabilised version of ABS. The correct choice for any outdoor application where standard PLA or PETG would degrade or yellow over time.
- TPU — flexible, rubber-like filament. Suitable for seals, bumpers, vibration dampers, cable organisers, and any part requiring elasticity.

How does the FDM print-on-demand process work?
Email your STL or 3MF file to 3dservices@tonerandink.co.za. If you don't have a 3D file, send a clear photo of the part with measurements — we can advise on how to proceed from there, including referrals to local 3D modelling services if needed.
We'll confirm material recommendation, print cost, and turnaround time within one business day. If the file needs orientation adjustments or support structure changes that affect the quote, we'll flag those before proceeding.
On confirmation, we schedule and run the print on our ELEGOO Neptune 4 Max or Neptune 4 Plus depending on part size. Post-processing (support removal, light sanding where required) is included.

No minimum order. We print single parts, small batches, and production runs. The cost per part decreases at volume, but there's no floor on quantity. If you need one bracket, we'll print one bracket.
