What FDM printing actually is — and what it's good for
Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) is the most widely used 3D printing technology for practical, functional output. A thermoplastic filament is melted and deposited layer by layer according to a digital model, building up a solid three-dimensional object. The technology has matured to a point where high-speed FDM printers — like the ELEGOO Neptune 4 Max in our Somerset West showroom — produce parts at speeds and quality levels that were industrial-only ten years ago.
FDM's strength is in functional output: parts that need to do something, survive something, or fit somewhere specific. It's the right technology for brackets, enclosures, fixtures, prototypes, replacement components, signage elements, and any other application where the part's job matters more than its surface finish.
What Cape Town businesses and makers are printing through our service
The design-print-iterate cycle is one of FDM's most powerful practical benefits. A product concept that used to require weeks of tooling lead time or expensive machining can now go from a CAD file to a physical, handled prototype within a day or two. For Cape Town product designers, engineers, and entrepreneurs, this changes what's practically possible at the early development stage.
We print prototypes in PLA for visual assessment, PETG for functional testing where some flex and toughness is needed, and ABS or ASA where heat or UV exposure is part of the prototype's test conditions.
A broken clip, a snapped mounting bracket, a missing housing cover for a machine whose parts haven't been manufactured for years — these are common problems across workshops, small manufacturers, farms, and facilities in the Western Cape. If you can photograph and measure the broken part, or supply the original for reference, we can often model and print a functional replacement at a fraction of the cost of sourcing it through specialist channels, if it's available at all.
We print structural replacement parts in PETG or ABS-like materials depending on load and temperature requirements. If the part needs to handle heat or UV exposure, ASA is the appropriate filament.
Electronics projects, IoT devices, custom instrument builds, and maker projects regularly need enclosures that don't exist off the shelf. A custom-designed FDM enclosure in a specific size, with cutouts for your exact connector positions and mounting holes for your PCB layout, is faster and cheaper to print than to fabricate in any other way for small quantities. We print in PLA for indoor fixed installations and PETG or ABS for enclosures that need to handle temperature variation or outdoor exposure.
Three-dimensional signage letters for shopfronts, reception walls, event branding, and exhibition displays are a natural FDM application. Letters, logos, and dimensional graphics can be printed in a range of colours and filaments — PLA for indoor decorative signage, ASA for outdoor UV-stable applications. Signage filament in our range is specifically formulated for clean surface finish on dimensional letters and display pieces.
Small manufacturing, craft, and assembly businesses frequently need custom jigs — components that hold a workpiece at a specific angle, guide a tool along a consistent path, or organise a repetitive assembly process. These are straightforward to design and print in PETG or carbon-filled filament, and unlike off-the-shelf solutions, they can be precisely matched to your specific equipment and workflow. A one-off jig that costs a few hundred rand to print can save hours of inconsistent manual alignment over a production run.
Market stalls, retail environments, and exhibition setups regularly need product display pieces that standard solutions don't cover — a holder shaped for your specific product format, a branded stand in your brand colour, or a custom display component that positions products at the right angle and height for your particular setup. FDM handles small-batch custom display pieces economically, with no minimum order quantity and no tooling cost between design iterations.

General purpose. Clean surface, wide colour range. Prototypes, display pieces, indoor fixtures — anything that doesn't face heat or UV.
Tougher and slightly flexible. Handles moisture and repeated handling well. Functional parts, enclosures, anything that gets used rather than displayed.
Heat-resistant and impact-resistant. For parts that live in hot environments — near machinery, in vehicles, in direct sunlight.
UV-stable and weather-resistant. The outdoor material of choice — signage, exterior mounts, anything exposed to the South African sun.
Flexible. Phone cases, gaskets, grips, feet, seals — anything that needs to bend and recover its shape.
Formulated for clean, smooth surfaces on dimensional letters and display elements. Available in multiple colours.

How our FDM print-on-demand service works
- Send your file: email your STL or 3MF file to 3dservices@tonerandink.co.za with a brief description of the part's application and any material preferences.
- We review and quote: we check the file for printability, confirm the appropriate material, and send you a quote with a realistic turnaround time. Most quotes are returned within one business day.
- We print: using our ELEGOO Neptune range including the Neptune 4 Max for large or high-speed print jobs.
- Collect or delivery: collect from Somerset West or we arrange delivery. Same-day Cape Town delivery available for urgent in-stock items where timing allows.
