Resin vs. FDM: Which ELEGOO 3D Printer is Right for You?

Resin vs. FDM: Which ELEGOO 3D Printer is Right for You?

So, you’ve finally decided to dive into the world of 3D printing. Awesome! It’s one of the most rewarding hobbies (and business tools) out there. But then you start browsing the Toner and Ink store, and you see the ELEGOO Neptune and the ELEGOO Saturn, and you start wondering: "What on earth is the difference between Resin and FDM?"

It’s the most common question we get, and the answer depends entirely on what you want to make. Think of FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling), like the Neptune 4 series, as the "reliable workhorse." It uses a spool of plastic filament (PLA, PETG, or ABS) that is melted and squeezed through a nozzle to build your object.

  • Why choose FDM? It’s perfect for functional parts, larger toys, and household fixes. If you want to print a sturdy stand for your laptop, a custom bracket for a shelf, or a large-scale cosplay helmet, FDM is your best bet. It's generally more "plug-and-play," the materials are affordable, and the post-printing cleanup is minimal.

On the flip side, we have Resin (Stereolithography), like the Saturn 4 Ultra. This is where things get high-tech. Instead of melting plastic, these printers use a liquid resin that is cured (hardened) by a UV light screen.

  • Why choose Resin? It’s all about the detail. If you are into tabletop gaming and want to print highly detailed miniatures, or if you’re a jeweler wanting to create intricate casts, Resin is non-negotiable. The finish is incredibly smooth—you can barely see the layers. However, be prepared for a bit more "work." Resin prints need to be washed in alcohol and cured in UV light after they're finished, and you’ll want to work in a well-ventilated space.

The Verdict? If you’re a beginner who wants to make cool, sturdy stuff for the house or the kids, go with the Neptune 4. If you’re a perfectionist who wants to create art, jewelry, or gaming minis with "pro" levels of detail, the Saturn 4 is your dream machine. Still feeling a bit overwhelmed?
